In this issue, I'd love to share an inspiring story about a great product in swimwear inspired by nature, and how we can take inspiration from everything around us.
Performance swimwear has helped athletes reach new heights in the world of competitive swimming, and one of the most iconic brands is Speedo. But what exactly goes into a swimsuit designed to help athletes move like lightning in the water? Speedo took a page from nature's playbook to help design their swimwear for maximum performance.
Most modern swimming suits are made from synthetic materials like nylon and polyester. But these fabrics often cause drag (or resistance) against the water. And in a sport where nanoseconds can make a difference, new swimsuits needed to offer something that nylon and polyester couldn't.
To create the next level of performance swimwear, Speedo looked to sharks for inspiration. They studied the hydrodynamic properties of shark skin that helped them glide through the water with such speed and efficiency, evolutionary traits that had been perfected over millions of years.
Sharks are nature's natural swimmers, and they have evolved over time to be extremely efficient in the water. They have a special type of skin covered with thousands of tiny denticles that are arranged in rows and act like miniature ridges or dimples. These features help create a thin layer of air between the shark's body and the water, reducing friction and enabling them to move faster and more efficiently. And when the only thing between you and dinner is the ability to reach it first, performance matters!
Speedo was able to replicate this same hydrodynamic effect in their swimsuits by creating a textured fabric that mimics the features of shark skin. To bring the shark's influence full circle, they even named the fabric "Fastskin," which speaks for itself. The swimwear line has been a huge success, helping athletes break records and reach new heights in their sport.
Swimmers all over the world have benefited from Speedo's creativity, thanks to their innovative design inspired by some of nature's most efficient swimmers – sharks! By combining research into natural speed and evolutionary design, Speedo brought to life a performance swimwear line that lets athletes take their aquatic game to the next level.
